Mr. ASTLEY, ever on the watch for new subjects for representation, has, in his performances of Monday, displayed more genius, taste, and spirit than we ever imagined could be possessed by one man. Formerly (and now, indeed at other houses of this sort), an entertainment was suffered to run so long, until, instead of being attracted by it, the public became tired of the same thing, and absolutely ran away from it. The Amphitheatre of Arts, on the contrary, new in itself, seems, as it were, determined to have nothing old about it; and therefore, quitting the former mode, has adopted another, by which the town is furnished with new and sterling pieces of amusement long before the others are worn out. Among the many which have been exhibited of latter years on our Summer Theatres, none have been more happily imagined than those at present in performance at Westminster Bridge, which do infinite credit to Mr. ASTLEY, as a Manager and Machinist, and which appear under the following names, viz.—the PETER GUNNERS, or the FIRST OF SEPTEMBER; the CAROUSAL; a TRIP TO BURGUNDY; and RETURNED FROM THE CONTINENT.
