A greater proof that novelty and variety will always ensure success, was never given perhaps than by the very extraordinary encouragement that has been experienced at Astley’s Theatre, the numerous entertainments of which receive no inconsiderable strength from the new burletta of Cupid Pilgrim, which in every respect must be allowed a most excellent burletta; but particularly so for the humour it possesses, and the neatness and delicacy with which it is worked up; indeed it is the character of all his musical pieces, that while they are truly whimsical and entertaining, they never fail pleasing alike the whole of the audience, never hurting by any ill-timed satire, or indecent joke, the feelings of any one; an observation that holds equally good with respect to the other various amusements, which at the same time that they are perfectly moffensive[sic] are too spirited, novel, and various not to continue his Theatre the first place of fashionable resort.
