Yesterday Astley’s Annual Wherry, valued at 25 guineas, was rowed for by the following free Watermen:--
Abraham Lock, Stangate, blue.
John Shepherd, Lambeth, scarlet.
John Mallet, Cuper’s Bridge, yellow.
Robert Barrow, Blackfriars, purple.
Edward Burch, Three Cranes, green.
James Howell, Westminster, pink.
The boats started at five o’clock from Stangate, to row round a boat moored off Cumberland Gardens, back through the centre arch of Westminster Bridge, round a boat moored off Hungerford, and to return to Stangate. The first heat was admirably contested, and won by Lock, Shepherd, and Burch. The second heat Lock took the lead, maintained it with great skill, and returned triumphant. The weather was very fine, and the river was covered with boats.
