ASTLEY’s ANNUAL PRIZE WHERRY.—The rowing match for the Annual Prize Wherry given by Mr. ASTLEY, in honour of his Royal highness the Prince Regent’s Birth-day, was, from the unfavourable weather, postponed from Monday last to yesterday afternoon. The parties started at half-past four, as follows:--
NAMES. WHERE BELONGING. COLOURS.
Harry Lewis, Horselydown, Yellow.
George Wyld, Lambeth, Green.
George Mead, Rattle Bridge, Purple.
John Hagley, Cuper’s Bridge, Scarlet.
[faded] Bloomfield, Horseferry, Blue.
William [faded], Ratcliffs Gross, Brown.
The contest from Westminster-bridge to Vauxhall was nearly equal. LEWIS, of Horselydown, however, shewed more strength than the others, and kept first the whole of the first heat, while BLOOMFIELD, WYLD, and MEAD, alternately headed each other; LEWIS, however, came in first, WYLD second, and MEAD third. The second heat took place at half-past five—the three latter starting for the prize. They were all alongside each other from Wesminster-bridge to Vauxhall-bridge, when WYLD laid hold of LEWIS’s boat with his hand, which caused MEAD to pass them. This was adjudged foul, and the three boats were started again from Vauxhall-bridge, and never was there such a well contested heat, each boat being nearly abreast, MEAD taking the lead still they came to Westminster-bridge, when MEAD and WYLD rowed into each other momentarily, which gave LEWIS, of Horselydown, an opportunity of rowing past them, and he won the Prize Wherry, which was presented to him at the Amphitheatre.
