The pathetic interest in the late Mr. CHARLES DIBDIN’s ballad of the High mettled Racer, has deservedly placed it at the head of lyric composition; but it remained for the scientific and preserving exertions of Mr. DAVIS to immortalise, by animal sagacity and scenic display, that truly excellent effusion of the poet. The Horse-race and Fox-chace in the pantomime of Harlequin on Horseback (above alluded to), is carried on with true sporting eclat while the gradations of the horse, from the race-course to the period when deprived of motion, he is shot out of, and the cart drawn from under him, is beyond doubt the very climax of equestrian science.
