Mr. Astley was honoured last night with a visit from the Duc de Chartres, which occasioned a more than usual splendid appearance in the boxes. The additional amusements rendered this night’s entertainment deserving the amazing applause it received. Mr. Astley, in his manly exercise of the broad sword, acquitted himself with as much dexterity and activity as we ever remember to have seen him. The wonderful performance of the Monkey on the tight-rope was, we thought, more excellent than usual. The Dancing Dogs went through their various feats with greater address and perfection than when we saw them last perform. As to the English Devil, he improves beyond all conception. The rest of the tumblers were also most successful in their various and excellent performances; and we are happy to hear his Grace exercised his generosity with such propriety as to present Mr. A⸻ with twenty guineas, to be distributed among some particular performers, who had the good fortune to attract most of his approbation.
