The First Night of KOTZEBUE’s VIRGIN OF THE SUN,
a New Grand Spectacle Ballet of Action.
AT the Royal Amphitheatre, ASTLEY’s, Westminster Bridge, THIS EVENING, will be presented (never performed) an entire new Operatic Ballet of Action, interspersed with Song, Recital, Dance, and Chorus, (composed, written, and arranged by Mr. ASTLEY, Jun.) called ROLLA and CORA, or the VIRGIN OF THE SUN from the German of Kotzebue, and the literal translation of Miss Phunptre; with most superb Scenery, Machinery, Dresses, Decorations, Trophies, &c. In the course of the Piece will be pourtrayed [sic] the exact Procession which preceded Ataliba, Inca of Quito, when, in full Assembly, Rolla was declared his Heir. Also the Solemn Procession of Priests and Priestesses, &c. from the House of Stars to the Temple of the Sun, from whence Pizarro collected his riches; with the Destruction of that Idolatrous Temple, and the total Abolition of Peruvian Superstition. The Characters in this superb Piece as follow: Ataliba, (Inca of Quito) Mr. Lascelles, sen. High Priest of the Sen, Mr. Fox; Xaria, (an inferior Priest) Mr. Holland; Telasco, (of the Inca Family, and Father to Cora) Mr. Rayner; Zorai, (his son) Mr. Gomery; Officers of the Peruvian Army, Messrs. Collet, Marqui, Taylor, Banks, Link, and Lascelles, jun. and Rolla, Mr. Mercerot; Truth, Mrs. Wells; High Priestess, Mrs. Wallack; Idalia and Amazili, (Priestess Mrs. Burton and Mrs. Mercerot; and Cora, (the Virgin of the Sun) Miss Smith. Priests and Priestesses, Cupids, Banner Bearers, Warriors, Spearmen, Swordsmen, Soldiers, Attendants, Courtiers, &c. &c. by the rest of the Company. The New Music by Mess. Broad and Lawrence; the Dresses by Mess. Gotleb, Clary, Betz, Foster, and Assistants; the Scenery by Mess. Grieves, Spitzer, Matthews, &c. the Properties, Trophies, &c. by Messrs. Bradwell, Rombaldi, &c.; and the Machinery, &c. by Mess. Gillet and Honor.
Mr. ATKENS, the VENTRILOQUIST, will go through his Wonderful Performances.—The grand TROOP of JUMPERS will fly over Five Horses and Riders, a loose Pole, twelve feet high, peculiar to themselves.—The TROOP of HORSEMEN will exert themselves in various surprizing Feats of Horsemanship; and the curious little Horse will perform in the intervals.—By way of Prelude, a Comic Pantomime, called HARLEQUIN IN HIS ELEMENT; interspersed with a most splendid Variety of Scenery, Machinery, Transformations, &c. &c.—An entirely New, Magnificent, and truly Grand Spectacle Romance (in two parts), called the BLACK CASTLE, or The SPIRIT OF RAVIA.—Mr. Astley, jun. and Miss Smith will perform principal Characters in the above piece.
