SUMMER THEATRES.
Mr. Astley, jun. has made an entire new theatre, and he has displayed great taste and even magnificence in the decorations. The new circle of boxes is enlarged, the fluted pillars are elegantly ornamented with mirror glass and gold alternately. There are eight or ten beautiful chandeliers pendant from the pillars; and the parts of the boxes are decorated with groupes [sic] of cupids in medallions on a light blue ground and gold borders. The roof is painted in twelve compartments representing the signs of the Zodiac. The seasons in the corners, and in the front Britannia, receiving contributions from the four quarters of the earth. The effect is heightened by the blaze of light which is thrown on the whole. This Theatre now presents one of the finest spectacles in Europe, and does infinite credit to the talents and taste of the manager.
Nor has he limited his exertions to mere decoration: He has procured a most perfect orchestra; and we presume to say, that the amateurs will be most agreeably surprised by the union of science and execution which they display. The Overture to the new grand serious piece of the Iron Tower is an admirable piece of music, particularly in the obligato passages. There is also a young vocal performer of the name of Sincox, who has a most wonderful voice, and who would be a great accession to the best band in Europe. He was received with the warmest applause.
