RE-ENGAGEMENT of the FRENCH COMPANY, and a New SERIO COMIC SPECTACLE.
[pointer-finger symbol] Mr. Astley, Jun. respectfully begs leave to return his unfeigned Acknowledgements for the very flattering and unprecedented success which the Royal Amphitheatre has experienced during his Management, more particularly for the unbounded applause given, by brilliant and crowded Audiences, to the performances of the NEW FRENCH COMPANY, whom, in compliance with the wishes of several persons of distinction, Mr. ASTLEY deems it a duty incumbent on him to RE-ENGAGE them for ONE MONTH LONGER, in consequence of which he is enabled to announce their appearance this Evening, in an entire Serio Comic Spectacle, as performed at the Theatre of the City of Paris, upwards of 200 nights.
THIS present MONDAY, Aug. 23d, will be presented, never performed in this kingdom, an entirely new Serio Comic Spectacle, with new Scenery, Dresses, French Music, &c. produced under the direction of Mons. Goubisbus, sen. called VICTIMS of TYRANNY, or the MONKISH WARRIORS. Principal Characters, Friar Jaques (a young Novice) Mon. St. Aubin. Sophia, Mad. Le Fevre. Superior of the Convent, Mos. St. Martin. Father Bequillard, Mon. Papillon. Friar Anthony, Mon. Gouisbus, jun. Gardener of the Convent, Mos. Gougisbus, sen. French General, Mos. Langlade. Blaize, Mos. Trevers. Jaqueline (his Wife) Mad. Renet. Austrian General, M. Blondin. Cupid, Mad. Blondin. Hymen, Miss Johannot.—Huland Officers, Plunderers, French Soldiers, Austrian Soldiers, &c. &c. The Scenery, Machinery, &c. designed by Mr. Grieve, and executed by him, Mr. Smith, Mr. Whitmore and Assistants. The Dresses after the French Costume, by Messrs. Gotleb, Klarey, Williams, &c.
Preceding the above, (1st time) an Entertainment of Music and Dancing, called THE WIDOW and NO WIDOW: or, The Faithful Irishman. Principal Characters, Tradeall, Mr. Fox. Chavaller, Mr. Wallack. Selvin, Mr. Fisher. Paddy, Mr. Johannot. Mrs. Tradeall, Mrs. Wallack—and Louisa, Mrs. Weldon. Gypsies, Fortune Tellers, &c. &c.
In the course of the evening various feats of HORSEMANSHIP. Likewise an entire new Song by Mr. Wallack. And, for the 37th time, the new comic Pantomime, with extensive Scenery, Machinery, and various Mechanical Changes, called The PHOENIX; or, Harlequin and Lillipo. In the course of which will be pourtrayed [sic], Mons.Garnerin’s and Captain Sowden’s AErial Voyage in a Balloon, with an exact representation of its appearance over London, and its Descent near Colchester, in the real Car, presented by Mons. Garnerin to Mr. Astley.
