ROWING MATCH.
Yesterday Astley’s 22d annual wherry, given in honour of his Majesty’s Birth Day, was rowed for by six watermen, who had not won any of the preceding prizes. Their names were:--
ABOVE BRIDGE. BELOW BRIDGE.
J. Hunt, Pepper-alley, Blue. E. Haroilton, Summer’s Key, Purple.
J. Thomas, Vauxhall, Scarlet. J. Palmer, Horselydown, Green.
J. Arther, Lambeth, Yellow. J. Lashbrook, Iron Gate, Pink.
The competitors started about four o’clock from the centre arch of Westminster Bridge, and having the pulled to Hunterford, returned, according to the terms of the first heat. The three successful boats were Lashbrook, Hunt, and Auther [sic]. This hear presented a grand trial of skill, but the activity and judgement of Lashbrook, enabled him to come in a considerable distance ahead of the others. At five o’clock three winning boats started again to row round a bout moored off Cumberland Gardens, return on the Surrey side, row round the beacon opposite Hungerford, and finally return to the Bridge. The grand contest on this occasion was between Lashbrooke and Hunt, the former, who was young and athletic, exerted himself to gain the wherry, but the strength and knowledge of Hunt prevailed; having gained the lead, he arrived first, and was declared victor, amidst the shouts of a large body of spectators in boats, and on the bank of the River. The admirers of aquatic sports have seldom obtained more gratification at a spectacle of this description. The candidates for the prize were distinguished by caps and sashes of their peculiar colours. Several excellent binds of music were stationed near the winning point, decorated with flags, and in short nothing was wanting to give effect to this annual regatta. We did not learn that any accident happened. In the evening the wherry was given to the winner at Astley’s Amphitheatre.
